Suffering from dry crusty nose

Animal: Dog
Breed: Cocker Spaniel

Pet Symptoms: My cocker spaniel is 9.5 years old. Over the past while he has been suffering from a dry crusty nose. In the last couple of weeks his nostrils became “fleshy”‘ that’s the only way I can describe it! I took him to the vet and they gave him a full examination, she said she could feel his glands were swollen and his eyes were red. He has a creamy colour eye discharge and a green mucus in his nose. He has had a biopsy done and I’m waiting for the results. Over the last two days one of his nostrils looks as it has had a slice take from it, it looks so painful. He is panting more frequently but not all the time, he sounds like he has a cold.

Our Advice: If he has had biopsies and you’re waiting on the results then until you have those, not a great deal more can be planned. If he isn’t on any medications, then sometimes an anti-inflammatory can help provide pain relief and settle swelling, but these can slow healing a little at the biopsy site. If infection is present then antibiotics may be warranted, but more often than not these aren’t necessary.
