Frequent Sneezing

From Sophie with dog Buster
Breed: Boxer

Pet Symptoms:

Recently, our dog has been sneezing a lot more frequent than usual. I’m not sure whether it is because a few days ago he received his kennel cough nasal spray at the vets, so he might have had a bit of a reaction to that? The day after the spray, Buster seemed to have a reverse sneezing fit, and now he is sneezing more than usual. At nights he has woken me up due to violent sneezes, something that really shocked me and I’ve never heard him do it before, but he has only done it 2 or 3 times during the night. Today I’ve noticed that his eyes seem a bit red but other than that (and the sneezing) he is fine. Could this be a cold or a reaction to the kennel cough spray? I’d just like some info before we decide to take him to the vets again. Thank you!

When Buster was reverse sneezing we rubbed his neck and this helped, but other than that we don’t know what to do.

Our Advice:

Thank you for your email. The kennel cough vaccine is a live vaccine so dogs can sometimes develop mild signs of the disease (typically runny eyes and nose, sneezing and coughing) after vaccination – this is more common in young animals. These symptoms normally settle down in a few days, although can occasionally persist for longer. If Buster’s symptoms do not improve over the next day or two I would recommend you make an appointment for him to be checked over by your vet earlier if he seems otherwise unwell.
