Excessive thirst

Our Advice:

Thank you for your email. Excessive thirst can be a sign of several underlying problems – in an older cat the top causes are kidney failure and an overactive thyroid. I would suggest you take OB to your local vet for a health check; depending on the results of the clinical examination your vet may wish to do some blood tests to find out the underlying cause of the change in thirst. In the meantime it’s important not to withhold water from OB to try to make him drink less – his body needs the extra water.
